State Action to Accelerate Safe Access to Psychedelic Treatments
The Partnership for Innovative Action helps states integrate evidence-based psychedelic treatments into health care rapidly and responsibly. We work with policymakers, health officials, and clinical partners to expand safe, affordable access and support high-quality care.
What are psychedelic treatments?
Psychedelic treatments combine a psychoactive medication with structured clinical care. They are not take-home prescriptions and are administered under qualified supervision. Many emerging psychedelics involve only 1-3 treatment doses. Most treatment models include four basic steps:
Screening. Diagnosis, safety assessment, treatment plan.
Preparation. Education, informed consent, therapeutic support.
Administration. Appropriate setting, care team supervision, safety protocols.
Integration. Continued care, ongoing therapy, recovery.
Several drug programs are in late-stage development. Different psychedelic compounds vary in duration, pharmacology, and safety risks. Psychedelics as a whole represent an emerging class of treatments with product-specific protocols.
Psychedelics induce acute changes in perception, emotion, cognition, and neural plasticity that may create a time-limited opportunity for therapeutic change. During the treatment window, patients may be better able to engage with difficult emotions, revise rigid thought patterns, and adopt new behaviors. Clinical support before, during, and after dosing is intended to make the experience safe and therapeutic.
Without State Action, Safe Access for Most Patients Will Take a Decade or More
Federal approval will not by itself ensure that patients with treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and other serious mental health challenges can safely access psychedelic treatments.
When novel treatments enter the health system, states have consistently led the way. In recent years, states have tackled access challenges for gene therapy, Hep C, and opioid use disorder by standing up delivery infrastructure, payment models, and provider networks that turn federal approval into patient access.
States have already invested nearly $100 million in psychedelic research. With FDA approval coming, bipartisan legislative coalitions are ready to give state agencies the direction and authority to act decisively, before delivery gaps become baked in.
About Our Work
PFIA will launch campaigns across 5+ states in 2027 to establish System Readiness Programs. These laws will help build the shared infrastructure needed for safe, equitable, reimbursable care with psychedelic treatments
The Partnership for Innovative Action works with states to advance research and scale safe access to psychedelic treatments in supported clinical settings. Our mission is to help states integrate evidence-based psychedelic treatments into real-world health care systems.
Federal policymakers are accelerating approval of psychedelic treatments—health systems experts are urging states to begin preparing now.
Our Priorities
System Readiness
Emerging treatment models with psychedelics require new infrastructure. States need trained providers, qualified sites of care, and professional standards to deliver treatment responsibly.
Affordable Access
FDA approval alone won't make treatment affordable. States need funding and payer strategies so access isn't limited to patients who can pay out of pocket.
Real-World Learning
The launch of FDA-approved psychedelics is a critical learning opportunity. States need systems to collect real-world data and evidence to support responsible policies.
